we cancelled cable.

2014 has brought some big changes in the pope household! jimmy left his job of 5 years to focus on finishing his CPA. it was a tough decision but one we knew was necessary in order for both of us to accomplish our goals & stop putting them off. prior to him leaving, we had to come up with a plan.

i have used mint.com since we got married. it allows me to track everything & also helps when constructing budgets, goals, etc. this helped identify where we were hemorrhaging our earnings.

cough cough target cough cough.

all kidding aside, it helped identify pesky spending habits & showed us what we needed to eliminate to help us as much as we could this year.

here is what we did to save:

SAVINGS

* we were able to figure out a part time daycare plan for benji thanks to both sets of grandparents!

* we paid off jimmy’s truck.

* we cancelled cable! ahhh. i told one of my girlfriends & she said she had to go look outside for any flying pigs! we have a roku in our bedroom & just purchased google chromecast for our living room. we can stream netflix, hulu & amazon. today is day 1 of no cable & so far, so good.

* i cancelled my monthly subscriptions (except for gwynnie bee – i downgraded & saved $45).

this is only month 1 but i am already so proud of us! what are some ways you have been able to save? any fun tips you can share?

xoxo,

vee

  1. My husband keeps talking about canceling our cable, but we still haven’t pulled that plug. Other than a few shows, I watch almost everything on Netflix. Something to think about for sure.

I truly haven’t been watching much TV. It has been a little annoying without a DVR but we’ll survive! Let me know if you forgo it! xoxo

We just cancelled our whole house DVR and removed the premium channels. I don’t know if I can cancel cable all together. I need my DIY and HGTV channels. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I love some of my primetime shows. Kudos to you for making that sacrifice. That’s huge.

Thanks, Haley! It was mostly for the savings due to us going to one income. So far, so good! xoxo
